Laser Hair Removal 101: All Your Questions Answered

When you’re considering laser hair removal, the decision can seem overwhelming: Is it safe? Is it effective? Will it hurt? Laser hair removal is actually a simple process that provides excellent results. Dr. Suri and his team at West Coast Aesthetics and Veins are here with Laser Hair Removal 101 to answer all of your questions.

How is hair removed?

A laser uses concentrated beams of light to destroy the source of your unwanted body hair right where it starts: the root.

At West Coast Aesthetics and Veins, Dr. Suri and his team use the xeo® laser, a cutting-edge technology that’s not only more effective at targeting your hair follicle, it’s also more comfortable.  The xeo laser is fully customizable, so it delivers the precise energy needed to damage your hair follicles regardless of your hair’s coloring or texture, or your skin tone.

Laser hair removal sessions take 20-60 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.

Where is it safe to use?

The xeo laser’s advanced technology makes it safe to remove unwanted hair from all over your body, including your legs and upper or lower back. It’s also gentle enough to use on sensitive areas like your face, underarms, and bikini line.

The xeo laser also makes it easy to remove hair in large or small areas.

How long until I see results?

Laser hair removal offers immediate results, but you need multiple sessions to get a permanent outcome.

Each of the hair follicles in your body has a three-part life cycle. During a follicle’s growth cycle, it produces an entire hair. After the growth cycle concludes, the follicle moves into a resting period and then eventually triggers a signal that new growth should begin.

A hair follicle can only be disabled when it’s in the growth stage, but your hair in the treatment area will be in different stages of the life cycle, so you’ll need treatment again when other follicles are in the growth cycle.

How many treatments do I need?

The number of treatments you need depends on where you’re having hair removed.

To disable all of the hair follicles, Dr. Suri and his team typically recommend 6-8 treatments. These sessions are scheduled every 6-12 weeks depending on the location of the hair removal area so your skin can rest between treatments.

In most cases, laser hair removal without significant regrowth can last 6-12 months, but results vary depending on the number of treatments you have.

Does it hurt?

The xeo laser was designed to increase your comfort during treatments, but you may experience a slight tingling sensation in the area if you’re sensitive.

Compare that tingling with the more traditional hair removal treatments like lotions, waxing, and shaving, which can lead to skin irritation like lumps, redness, or ingrown hairs.

Following your hair removal treatment, there can be mild irritation, redness, or swelling in the area, but this fades within a few days. It’s important to avoid sun exposure and stay hydrated while your skin is sensitive.
